In the movie, Lucario's trainer, Sir Aaron, while trying to protect Lucario, traps his beloved friend in his aura staff, the one Lucario brandishes in the picture. When Lucario is freed from his prison, it's hundreds of years later, and Sir Aaron is long gone.
